Alliance Workers in Africa Robbed
A relaxing beach picnic in Gabon turned into a harrowing encounter on January 3. Alliance workers were robbed by a group of six men brandishing glass bottles and other sharp objects.
The missionaries, including the Straws, Solvigs, Brokopps, and Kings, along with their children, were enjoying a cookout when the thugs appeared about 8 p.m. from a nearby creek area and split into two groups.
"Before anyone could move, they had grabbed Steve Straw's bag," said Arnie Solvig, who charged two of the robbers. "One of the thieves snatched a digital camera from Meredith Brokopp, who screamed as she struggled with the man grabbing it from her."
Panicked, the thieves escaped with only two bags and the camera. Several missionaries ran after them but returned to their families after losing the men in the darkness.
Inside the stolen bags were car and house keys, two telephones, and money, along with Steve and Alace Straw’s ID cards, which will need to be replaced.
"We are so thankful to God that no one was hurt. Keep praying for our emotional well-being!" Solvig said.
